Here is a nice early 1950's Martin Medium Bore Committee. It hasn't been abused, or relacquered, or stripped or buffed or suffered any attempted coverups. I am very fortunate to live a short distance from some wonderfully talented brass technicians. It's not unusual see Top Pro Symphony players hanging around their shop while these gentlemen work their magic. So, after I played this horn enough to know I wanted to keep it I took it in to their shop to have it checked out. I assumed it would need it's valves overhauled so I requested that be done while they had it. I had given it the little do it yourself test where you extend the slides and put your ear up to the bell or leadpipe and count how many seconds it takes for the hiss to stop. This horn took about 15. When I do the test on my two year old Yamaha 9335 it will only last about 10. And, you can set the horn down and go away for a while and come back, press a valve and still here a pop, which I think is real good. But I really don't know if it reveals much about the true condition of the valves. Whatever test the tech does though, it passed with flying colors because he said the valves are in fantastic condition and recommended not touching them, except for an alignment, which was done.
Because I play in an ensemble where I am expected to compensat
